You can cover a lot of ground quickly, and with large tank capacities, large quantities of herbicides, pesticides or water can be carried to minimise refilling trips.
When you have finished using your sprayer however, maintenance of the sprayer after each use will keep the sprayer in good condition, extending it's life and also prevents the need for repairs or replacements.
Before anything else, study the operator's manual carefully. Although you know how to use your sprayer, reading the manual may give you better insight into what is required to keep it in good shape. The manual will also contain the model and part numbers required when calling the manufacture in case of damage or if you need replacement parts. Keep the manual in a safe and convenient location for future reference.
Before using the sprayer, perform a visual inspection to check for any visible wear and tear. Check the hoses to make sure there are no leaks and clean out filters so they don't get clogged while spraying.
It is also very important to empty the sprayer after each use and fill it with clean water to wash the chemicals out of the tank. If you are using a different set of chemicals in your next use, flush the pump and spray lines with clean water. Make sure to wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with chemicals. Always check the chemical manufacturers requirements.
Regular maintenance is paramount for ensuring your sprayer is kept in good condition. Monthly maintenance plans are recommended or if using your sprayer often, weekly cleaning and maintenance is a good idea.
It is also a good chance to test the sprayer to make sure it is spraying at it's full capacity. Test your nozzles to determine how many litres they should be spraying in one minute at what pressure. You can do this by running clean water through the sprayer nozzle and into a jug. Compare the amount of water in the jug with the suggested amount of water based on the nozzle manufacturer’s chart. Replace the nozzle if it’s not performing.
